Journey questions
Small decisions that make travel stories clearer, more credible and easier to produce responsibly.
Is a phone enough for a travel reel?
Often, yes. Clear framing, readable captions and a coherent sequence matter more than a complicated kit. Use equipment you can operate without compromising your responsibilities.
How long should my reel be?
Use the time needed to establish the question, show the change and resolve it. There is no universal duration that guarantees engagement. Check the current limits of your publishing platform.
Can I film while handling a boat?
Do not let filming compete with navigation, lookout, line-handling or any other assigned duty. Follow the skipper’s instructions and put the camera away when attention is needed.
What if I miss the most important action?
Explain it afterward with a truthful voiceover or written note. Do not repeat a risky activity or present a reconstruction as an unstaged event.
Do I need consent to film people?
Requirements depend on the setting, use and jurisdiction. When someone is a recognisable subject, explain your intended recording and publication and seek clear permission. Be especially cautious with children and vulnerable people.
Should I include drone footage?
Only if the operation is permitted and appropriate. Check aviation rules, airspace, site restrictions, privacy and wildlife concerns. A drone shot is optional, not a requirement for a complete story.
Can I use trending music everywhere?
Do not assume a platform’s music licence covers other platforms, downloaded edits or commercial use. Check the rights for the particular track and intended publication.
Does a hosted trip need a disclosure?
Clearly explain relevant commercial relationships, including gifted access, and follow the disclosure rules applicable to you. Make the disclosure understandable rather than burying it in ambiguous tags.
Does the voyage-note tool send my message?
No. It builds a plain-text draft in your browser. You may copy or download it and then choose whether to send it using your own email service.
Are these guides navigation or safety advice?
No. They are general editorial guidance. Use current official information, qualified instruction and the directions of the person responsible for your activity.
